Winson suffered from stammering and dyslexia in his childhood, causing him great difficulties in his academic and social life. The problem also turned him into a passive introvert with little self-confidence. Getting only seven points in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE), he knew he could not make it to university. He therefore enrolled on a higher diploma course in tourism and hospitality.

While being anxious about his future after graduation, Winson joined YETP, through which he met a circle of friends who accepted him and a case manager who cared about him. He then restored his confidence in getting along with people and rebuilt a normal social circle. Also, by attending the core course of YETP and related activities, Winson found he had a talent for photography and image design, and thus discovered a direction for his career. With the encouragement and assistance of the case manager, Winson received one month's workplace attachment training in a make-up and personal image company. During the training period, he established his career aspiration, and, with good performance, got employed. As a staff member of the company, he was offered on-the-job training and given ample learning opportunities in respect of photography and make-up by the employer. He also paid visits to different schools to teach students the basic photography skills and promote photographic work.

Winson said that his employer and case manager had given him great support and encouragement, which enabled him to recognise his worth and boost his confidence in interpersonal communication, as well as take image design and photography as his lifelong career. Winson also planned to enrol on make-up and personal image courses so as to enhance his competence and further develop his career.

Just like her peers at school, Li felt lost after graduation without any career aspiration. It was from a publicity banner that she knew about YETP and became an eLearning Support Assistant under the「e-Learning Support Scheme」.

Being new to the world of work, Li was quiet and unable to adapt to the role identity change from student to employee. After meeting YETP's case manager, she gradually identified her career goal and became more proactive in interacting with other people. Li knew from her own experience that the objective of YETP was not just to help young people in job-seeking, but also to further assist them in finding a career goal for a sound personal and career development.

At work, Li was conscientious and efficient in assisting in organising school activities and enhancing electronic administration work. At leisure time, Li participated in the「Hong Kong Award for Young People (HKAYP)」and spent long hours on expedition training to receive the gold award. Her perseverance was supported by the school, which encouraged her to move forward to achieve her goal.

Dicky used to be a video game addict and football lover. Unable to adapt to formal schooling, he always ditched classes and played truant. After completing three years of senior secondary education at an evening school, Dicky joined YETP and came to realise that he needed to get a fresh start. With the encouragement of his case manager, employer and training course tutor, he analysed and reviewed his inadequacies mindfully. He grasped every opportunity to learn and work. He made efforts to apply the knowledge he acquired in the training course and he did not mind going the extra mile to finish his work. After completing on-the-job training, Dicky was promoted from Trainee Salon Assistant to Junior Stylist. He took the initiative to enrol on related make-up courses, and was proactive in acquiring new knowledge to further pursue his career. With a passion for hair styling, he even made it to the final of the「WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2016」. His enthusiasm for the work and the encouragement from his employer and customers gave him a great sense of job satisfaction.

Dicky considers that YETP not only assisted him in job search, but also showed him the way to pursue continuing education and obtain international professional certificates, thereby widening his opportunities for overseas development in future.

A secondary school graduate, Steven joined the Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited (MTRCL) under the「Junior Tradesman Associate Training Project」jointly organised by YETP, MTRCL and a training body. After attending a pre-employment training course, Steven, who knew next to nothing about machinery maintenance, not only gained a basic understanding of the job-related skills, but also significantly improved his interpersonal skills. His family and friends also noticed the change in him.

As a freshman to MTRCL, there was a time when Steven was disheartened by his failure to fully master the work skills. He once felt uncertain about his career path. With the guidance of his superior and supervisor who earnestly talked to him about the areas for improvement at work, and the care given by his case manager who often asked him about the joy and pain in his work, Steven began to plan the way ahead. Aware of his own inadequacies, he was humble to learn and seek the advice of colleagues on the techniques of maintenance work to enhance his competence.

Steven was very grateful for the job opportunity provided by YETP, through which he got to know a team of sincere colleagues. He was willing to share his experience with young people. His goal is to enrol on a higher diploma programme in his spare time and then proceed to a degree course to enhance himself for career advancement, and eventually attain the qualification of an engineer.

Tina discovered that she was pregnant before sitting for the HKDSE. Instead of resorting to abortion, she decided to raise the baby on her own even though the father-to-be was reluctant to take up his responsibility and her family was financially strained. However, owing to insufficient work experience and child care problems, the single mother had a bumpy career path compared with other young people.

Through the pre-employment training under YETP, Tina gradually knew herself better and realised that as a mother, she had to be tougher and more committed. Tina then joined 「Career Kick-start」 under YETP, which gave her the opportunity to work as a Programme Assistant in a community service organisation. With the support of the organisation and assistance from her colleagues, Tina was able to strike a balance between child care and work. Although it was no easy task to take on the dual role of mother and employee, Tina endured the difficulties and remained positive. At present, apart from providing services to young mothers seeking help from the organisation, Tina also shares her story with her colleagues so that they can better understand the needs of this target group. With the recognition for her work, Tina is now more confident about facing the various challenges in life and finding her own direction.

Christina, who studied higher diploma in landscape architecture, has been in love with nature since childhood and has a keen interest in horticulture. She tried to find a horticultural job after graduation but most of the job vacancies available in the open employment market required at least two years' working experience, making it difficult for her to join the industry. Luckily, Christina learnt that YETP, Ocean Park and a training body jointly organised the「Junior Master Gardener Training Project」, which provided pre-employment and on-the-job training for young people without relevant working experience. Christina finally had her dream come true and successfully joined an industry of keen interest to her.

As a new recruit, Christina worried that she might not be able to adapt to the new working environment due to her shy and introverted personality. With her attentiveness and conscientiousness at work and her humble attitude to learn, Christina's colleagues were very willing to teach her various professional techniques and tips. They also constantly reminded her to protect herself against the sun ray and drink enough water. Moreover, the training body often contacted her to ask about how she fared in her job. Thus, Christina was quick to integrate into the big family of Ocean Park.

Christina's daily routine includes pruning and watering the trees according to the characteristics of the different species.  She also makes dolphin-shaped topiaries with tree seedlings and creates upcycling art installations with recycled tires. Christina hopes to display her talent in the field of horticulture and build her own career.

Wong did not do well in Form 5, and just followed his friends to enrol on a diploma course in accountancy. However, during his study, he realised that he was not interested in accounting. To evade facing the matter, Wong just carried on till the completion of the course. Subsequently, he noticed that the technical field had a good prospect, and there were chances to obtain professional qualifications progressively. He therefore participated in the related employment training and joined the「Lift Mechanic Trainee Training Project」under YETP.

Upon employment, Wong was mainly responsible for repairing lifts in public housing estates. The emergency repair of lifts required the technicians to carry out the repair work promptly, leaving little time to explain to him the work details. To improve himself, Wong utilised his keen observation and memorised the repair procedures of the technicians. When the work was done, he would consult the technicians about the technical know-hows. In those days of learning by doing, Wong had developed a greater sense of responsibility. He did not mind taking up additional work so that the residents, particularly elderly residents who had difficulty walking up and down the stairs, did not have to wait long for the lift service.

Wong is mature and understands that many young people try to find their career goals by switching jobs frequently. Yet, he thinks that a resume showing frequent job-hopping will inevitably give employers a bad impression. In this regard, YETP can provide a suitable platform for young people to know about different industries. Through pre-employment training, they can also understand whether the different occupations match their career aspirations, thus saving them the trouble of changing jobs frequently.

Chan took a higher diploma course in rehabilitation services after the HKDSE in the hope of pursuing a career in physiotherapy. However, his academic results were not satisfactory. Incidentally, he came to know about the「Patient Care Assistant Training Project」jointly organised by YETP, Hospital Authority Hong Kong West Cluster and a training body. He then took the opportunity to join the medical service field by working in Queen Mary Hospital.

At the beginning of his work, Chan's biggest obstacle was to work on shifts. He made great efforts and managed to adapt to the work pattern about two months later. Working in the orthopaedic (acute) department was extremely challenging, there were different urgent cases every day. After working hard for some time, the sloppy young man has tempered himself to become a responsible healthcare worker. Now, Chan knows how to understand the patients' needs by making careful observations, as well as provide them with suitable medical check-ups and nursing services. He is dedicated to assisting patients in achieving rehabilitation and putting the spirit of medical service into action.

Chan takes his work in the medical service field seriously. He believes the essence of service is that one can become happy by helping others and, by helping others, one also helps oneself. With a strong desire to improve himself, he hopes to seek long-term career development in the medical service field by moving up the hospital's well-defined promotion ladder.

To fulfil her childhood dream of becoming a chef, Vanessa took Home Economics in the HKDSE. Besides, she often honed her culinary skills during her spare time at home. Yet, she could hardly find a job in the field after graduation in the open job market due to lack of practical work experience. It was by chance that Vanessa participated in the 「Cook Apprentice Training Project」 jointly organised by YETP, Cathay Pacific Catering Services (H.K.) Ltd. and a training body. While undergoing pre-employment training, Vanessa was keen to acquire culinary knowledge. She hoped to be in top form to embrace her dream job. Before taking up the job, Vanessa worried that she could not meet the job requirements. Shing longed to follow his father's step to become a chef in the catering industry. Unfortunately, his career aspiration was not fully supported by his father who considered that being a chef was a kind of unrewarding hard work. Yet, Shing did not give up and even started working as a Hotel Operation Trainee (Culinary) in a hotel as arranged by YETP.

When Shing started to pick up the work with not much idea about fine cooking, he suffered a lot of setbacks and he nearly quitted the job. Later on, he realised that all the harsh criticisms from his master were meant for his own good. Since then, Shing pulled through the difficulties and eventually secured a position to work as a Junior Cook at the hotel when the on-the-job training ended. He invited his parents to dine at the hotel restaurant where he worked to demonstrate his competence and passion in the field so as to win his father's support for achieving his goal as a Senior Cook.
